Color Trends for 2022

Updated: May 24, 2022

Trending colors always set the tone for home improvements, fashion, and décor. HGTV's industry experts see a design landscape infused with colors that make us feel healthy, serene and centered in 2022. These calming blues, soft greens and grounded earth tones provide interiors with an optimistic outlook.

Below are three colors for you to keep on your radar for your next project:

HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ Aleutian

The light washed indigo of Aleutian (HGSW 3355) “is a stunning shade that promotes balance in our home and mental wellbeing,” explains Ashley Banbury, senior color designer for HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams. Its crystalline calm complements hues throughout Softened Refuge, the brand’s infectious 2022 Color Collection of the Year. “A cool shade with a red undertone helps bring cool and warm shades together,” Ashley says. Consider how gorgeously it washes across architectural details and spans the ceiling in this spacious, restful bedroom; it’s an intuitive partner for swaths of natural wood like this warm flooring, and in the sunlight it practically sparkles.

"Hues that set the tone for 2021 reflected a collective yearning for the cocooning comforts of home. Urbane Bronze (SW 7048) put a sophisticated spin on design classics from previous decades and served as a new-neutral anchor for another year indoors. We’re looking to step out of that den of nostalgia in 2022, and Evergreen Fog (SW 9130) is the way forward. “Urbane Bronze reflected our need to create a sense of calm, safety and security. Evergreen Fog is the natural next chapter in this story,” explains Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “From a color psychology standpoint, green is the color of nature, revitalization and growth. It is naturally emblematic of newness. Evergreen Fog signals growth, emergence and new beginnings.”

Valspar's Gilded Linen

Forward-thinking positivity guided Valspar’s color team in their selection of warm, natural shades for the company's 2022 Colors of the Year, which is comprised of a dozen shades chosen to inspire confidence, strength and curiosity. We love the look of Gilded Linen (6002-1A), an organic, enveloping white that imparts natural grace to multi-use, open-plan spaces like this one. “There is a new heightened importance to entryways, a drop-off zone for all our things entering the home — it’s a space where we have control of what comes and goes,” Valspar color marketing manager Sue Kim notes. “A simple neutral like Gilded Linen emphasizes our desire to have a home that is clean and organized. A great transitional color, it is perfect for entries and hallways connecting spaces throughout our home.”

A soft, versatile tone like this one is suitable for just about any room. “Use [Gilded Linen] in spaces with warm wood tones to feel cozy,” Sue suggests. “[It’s a] great warm white to combine with blues and grays” — like the handsome steel front door pictured here — “to add balance to the cool shades.”
